Something Unexpected

In general, I don't think of myself as someone with a short attention span. However, as my training progresses for the 2017 Marine Corps Marathon on October 22nd, I've been thinking it may be time to revise that opinion.

You see, with InterVol being an affiliate of Rochester Regional Health, I have the privilege of using an awesome fitness center, full of state-of-the-art treadmills, that just so happens to be located in the Riedman Campus, where InterVol's main office is located. Between the private TV screen, power port for my phone, and the interactive running trails, my time on the thing flies by.

Of course, I eagerly anticipated the start of summer and running outside in the fresh air, maybe starting a bit a of tan while I was at it. So a couple weeks ago, when it finally stopped raining and the thermometer hit 65, I put on my shoes and set off.

I was bored.

Very bored.

And scared. How exactly was I going to find the motivation to run, day after day?

The answer came to me by way of Colorado, from an old friend I used to hike with back when we still lived in the same city, let alone in the same timezone. I needed to go back to my roots and refocus on the thing I truly loved about hiking all over the world. It wasn't about being outside; it was about exploring something new.

So I tried it. The next day, I left my neighborhood and went down to Lake Ontario. It wasn't an entirely new location, but I'd never really explored the area on foot before. It was something different. And, in fact, it was fun!

So, to all the new and new-ish runners out there, don't despair or give up. Persevere until you find what works for you. Trust me, you'll be happy you did!
